Commodore REUs

What is this? REU stands for RAM Expansion Unit, get it? REU!! SO what does this have to do with this copy site? Well I was looking for a way to copy a disk without making 3-5 swaps from Source to Destination disk, without using two drives. Well the simple answer was to add more memory (add an REU).

The three main ones for, Commodore was the:

1700 with 128 kB
1750 with 512 kB
1764 with 256 kB

These need a more powerful power supply to work. There is also something called the “Super 1750 Clone” which is the size of a normal cartridge, plugs into the cartridge slot and needs to extra power. This is one I own and use. It’s that RED cartridge below.

There’s one more to talk about called: GeoRAM this was by Berkeley Software and was to tie in with their GEOS operating system for the Commodore 64.

Dongle Protection

The oddly named protection device called a DONGLE was plugged into the Commodore’s tape port or the joystick ports. When the program would load it would check for this Dongle, if it was there the program would load, if not the program would not.

Here a list of Commodore software that I know used a Dongle as it’s form of copy protection.

Code Wheel Copy Protection

This type of protection is not disk based, but something that came with a game that you had to make up items on the wheel and enter data into the game for it to start.
So you could usually copy the disk easily, but need this device to play.

The most famous example is the code wheel from the Secret of Monkey Island.

Super Parameters

Super Parameters (1987)Utilities Unlimited has many parameters. There are 5 disk in this seriesDisk #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5. Each had 100 parameters on it. Then there was also the Super Parameters 500 Pack. This has 500 different parameters not found on the 100 packs. SO does that mean that Utilities Unlimited released 1000 parameters?????

The Silver Series Vol 1 printout was included in my Vol 4 disk!

I have NEVER seen these packs.
Did they exist, let me know.
