Adjusting the Commodore 1541 disk drive alignment

If you have problems loading some programs you should test your drive speed and your drive alignment. It’s super easy to do with the Free Spirit Software 1541/1571 Drive Alignment software. Side one is the boot program and the back side of the disk is used for alignment. You can still find this software for around $10 on Ebay. Also this software will help you adjust your drive speed. I do have a video on that also.

Disk Surgeon by Ultrabyte

Disk Surgeon an Ultrabyte Disk Utility

As you know Ultrabyte was a copy program, so this seems as it states a Utility Disk. Was it later included with Ultrabyte? Remember Ultrabyte was around for multiple years with multiple versions.

Also included three Public Domain programs.
1. a file copy
2. Single Track Copy
3. 4 Minute copy

This might sound strange today, BUT back in the 80’s many, many computer stores sold or rented computer disk with Public Domain software on it. Remember there was no Internet to trade software back then. We had 300 baud modems and small BBS’s.

DiskMaker Plus

Disk Maker Plus (1986)

By the makers of Diskmaker. This appeared to be more of a parameter copier.
Meaning that it would ‘patch’ the copy to make it work. What I find very interesting is that it contained special password codes that would unlock hundreds of different disk. You select the title and the program would automatically place the “correct password code” on the copy. But that does sound alot like a parameter copier to me. Does a anyone have a copy of this and can comment below?

UPDATE: I have a working copy of this now. You have just 6 options from the menu. Sector Editor, Data copier, Disk Comparator, Nibbler, Error Scan, Parameter. I see NOTHING about this so called “Special password code”, that will unlock 100’s of disk. There are actually 223 parameters on side two of the disk.

DiskMaker

Disk Maker first appears in 1984.
Version 2.2 in 1985 and Version 3.3 in 1985
They had great full page ads and I am sure they sold many copies because of it!
Also claimed to be the Fastest & Most advanced Backup software you could buy.
Had “state of the ARTS” copier – which was code word for it could copy Electronic Arts games. Electronic Arts used FAT TRACKS 34/35 Protection around 1983-1985 before switching to Pirateslayer protection around 1986.
Also interesting was that Ver 1 was a 3 min copier and Ver 2.2 was a 4 min copier. It didn’t get fast, but was probably checking for more things or a more complete copy.
Version 3.3 had a Fast Copy: 3 pass / 2 minutes Electronics Arts copy: 4 pass / 3 minutes
Masterkey Nibbler: 5 passes / 5 minutes
